Williamson’s new physique is anticipated to help him maintain better health and durability throughout the season, addressing one of the major concerns that have affected his career so far. His enhanced conditioning is also expected to boost his on-court performance, making him an even more formidable presence for the New Orleans Pelicans. This change has sparked a lot of excitement and optimism among Pelicans fans, especially since they are excited about pairing DeJounte Murray with the big man in the Big Easy.
Over the last two seasons, Zion Williamson’s performance has been a mixed bag, marred by persistent injury issues.
2022-23 Season: Zion managed to play only 29 games, averaging 26.0 points, 6.97 rebounds, and 4.6 assists per game. While his scoring efficiency was impressive with a 60.8% field goal percentage and an improved 36.8% from three-point range, his limited appearances were a significant drawback. Despite some standout games, including a 43-point performance against the Timberwolves, his inability to stay on the court was a major concern.
2023-24 Season: Although Zion stayed healthier, playing in 70 games, his averages dropped to 22.9 points, 5.8 rebounds, and 5.0 assists per game. His field goal percentage remained strong at 57.0%, but the decline in his scoring and rebounding numbers was noticeable. Even with notable performances like a season-high 32 points against the Clippers and a 40-point game in the play-in tournament against the Lakers, his contributions were inconsistent. While he helped lead the Pelicans to their most successful regular season in 15 years with 49 wins, but Williamson’s absence in the 2024 playoffs was a major setback for the Pelicans. Sidelined by a left hamstring strain, he missed the entire first-round series against the Oklahoma City Thunder. Without their star player, the Pelicans struggled significantly and were swept in the series. His inability to stay healthy during crucial moments continues to be a glaring issue for the team.
Some feel the weight loss was motivated by his contract status. Williamson’s contract with the New Orleans Pelicans extends through the 2027-28 season. He signed a five-year rookie max extension starting in 2022-23. However, from the 2025-26 season onward, his contract is not fully guaranteed, allowing the Pelicans to waive him after the 2024-25 season without financial penalties.
In other words, if Zion Williamson misses a substantial number of games in the 2024-25 season, the Pelicans can significantly reduce his salary. However, if he plays at least 61 games and fulfills other contract conditions, his salary will be fully guaranteed again.
