Yankees Waive Luis González

The New York Yankees have waived outfielder Luis González from his contract with their Triple-A team. He’s now back on the market and will probably seek another opportunity in the minor leagues elsewhere.

González joined the Yankees in December but struggled during Spring Training, playing 10 games. He started the season with Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre, appearing in 22 games and getting 91 plate appearances.

While his batting stats were decent with a .282/.374/.397 slash line, he didn’t hit any home runs. Even if González had performed better in Triple-A, it’s unlikely he would have been called up to the Yankees.

The starting outfield spots are secured by Juan Soto, Aaron Judge, and Alex Verdugo, with Trent Grisham serving as a solid defensive center fielder off the bench.

González, on the other hand, has limited experience in center field and is better suited for a corner outfield position. Additionally, Jasson Domínguez may return to the minor leagues soon after starting a rehab assignment tomorrow.

González has played in parts of three MLB seasons, with stints at the White Sox and Giants between 2020-21. He had a decent performance with the Giants in 2022, batting .254/.323/.360 in 350 plate appearances.

However, he hasn’t played in the majors since then due to a back injury that required surgery during Spring Training last year. After his return, San Francisco placed him on outright waivers and released him last year.
