D.J. Carton, a free agent guard, has signed a deal with the Timberwolves, as revealed in an official statement by the team.
Carton’s basketball journey saw him initially with the Hornets after going unselected in the 2021 draft, but he was subsequently released before the season’s commencement.
Since then, he has been actively participating in the G League, with stints at Greensboro and Minnesota’s Iowa-based affiliate last season.
His performance in 47 combined G League appearances saw him maintain an average of 13.2 points, 3.7 rebounds, and 4.3 assists.
Moreover, Carton had the opportunity to showcase his skills with the Timberwolves during this year’s Summer League, where he impressively averaged 9.0 points and led the team with 6.8 assists over five games.
For his commitment, Carton received an Exhibit 10 contract, according to Darren Wolfson of 5 Eyewitness News.
This unique contract arrangement entitles him to a potential bonus of up to $75K if the Timberwolves release him and he spends a minimum of 60 additional days playing for their Iowa affiliate.
To facilitate Carton’s inclusion, the Timberwolves made room on their roster by waiving Vit Krejci on Wednesday, thereby bringing their preseason player count back to the maximum limit of 21.
