The Brooklyn Nets have traded their versatile star Mikal Bridges to the New York Knicks in exchange for several first-round picks and Bojan Bogdanovic, according to ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski.
Following the trade, Wojnarowski reported that the Rockets are aiming to entice Kevin Durant away from the Suns using their collection of picks.
“Brooklyn has agreed with Houston to swap the Nets’ 2026 first-round pick for the Suns’ 2027 first-round pick. Additionally, the Rockets gain the right to exchange their 2025 first-round pick with Oklahoma City’s for the Suns’ 2025 first-round pick.” Woj wrote.
“The implications of the Rockets landing the Suns’ picks? Houston wants to trade for Kevin Durant and that becomes far easier if they can return the Suns’ picks that they gave up in the Durant deal to the Nets. Suns have said they’re keeping Durant for now, but that could change next season. But now, Houston has the picks to make the Suns whole again.”
“Rockets possess a pick swap with Suns in 2025, Suns’ pick in 2027 and could end up with the Suns’ pick in 2029 based on contingencies. If the Suns are ever faced with breaking up team, Houston’s also in prime position to pursue a younger Devin Booker. For now, Phoenix is trying to win.”
While the Suns have expressed a desire to maintain their current core for next season, Wojnarowski hinted at the possibility of a shift in strategy. However, Suns insider John Gambadaro has ruled out (0% chance) the possibility of the Suns trading Durant this summer.
The Houston Rockets have been connected to several All-Stars this offseason. If Durant remains unavailable, they may target Miami Heat’s Jimmy Butler, Clippers’ Paul George, or Grizzlies’ Marcus Smart.
Durant, 35, has been a focal point of trade rumors throughout much of his career, and once again finds himself at the center of offseason discussions.
He recently completed his second season with the Suns, his first full campaign since joining them from Brooklyn in a trade during the February 2023 deadline.
Durant currently has two more years remaining on his contract before he becomes an unrestricted free agent in 2026.
The Rockets, who missed the playoffs this season, are reportedly focused on building a competitive team for the upcoming season.
