According to Yahoo Sports’ Jake Fischer, despite rumors of potential changes to the Cleveland Cavaliers’ roster this offseason, the team may not be actively pursuing major deals.
If any deals are made, it’s unlikely to involve their core players, known as the Core Four: Donovan Mitchell, Jarrett Allen, Evan Mobley, and Darius Garland.
Garland’s name has been circulating the most, especially after a turbulent season marked by injuries and inconsistency. However, the Cavs have other pressing priorities, such as hiring a new coach to replace J.B. Bickerstaff, who was recently let go after five-and-a-half seasons.
Additionally, they are waiting to see if Mitchell will sign a contract extension, which will heavily influence their offseason plans. They also have the upcoming NBA Draft where they hold the 20th overall pick.
While there have been rumors that Garland’s agent, Rich Paul, may request a trade if Mitchell signs an extension, no such request has been made yet, and the Cavs are currently maintaining their stance.
Fischer noted that , “The Cavs don’t appear very motivated to listen to trade inquiries for any member of their core four, sources said, even with the possibility that Garland’s representation at Klutch Sports could move to request a trade if Mitchell extends long term.”
In essence, the Cavaliers are focused on bringing in a new coach and sticking with their current roster for training camp and the early part of next season. They believe there’s no need to rush into any major moves, as they have until the February trade deadline to make any necessary adjustments.
