The Pelicans ended the 2023-24 season with a 49-33 record, falling short of expectations but still managing to secure a Play-In Tournament spot. However, their journey ended quickly as they were swept by the OKC Thunder.
Reports suggest that the Pelicans aim to build a roster that better complements Zion Williamson’s playing style, which could lead to potential roster changes.
While Brandon Ingram is a likely trade candidate, the Pelicans are also rumored to be interested in acquiring Donovan Mitchell from the Cleveland Cavaliers, according to insider Zach Lowe on the Lowe Post Podcast.

The Pelicans would join the Heat, Lakers, Nets, Rockets, and Grizzlies as potential suitors for Mitchell if he decides not to extend his contract with the Cavaliers.
Even before the Cleveland Cavaliers were eliminated from the playoffs by the Boston Celtics, Donovan Mitchell’s name was circulating in trade talks.
Mitchell had an impressive season with the Cavs, averaging 26.6 points, and performed well in the playoffs with 29.6 points per game. However, like Ingram, Mitchell has been plagued by injuries.
Although Mitchell played 55 regular-season games, he missed the final two games of the Conference semifinals. While his presence might not have changed the series outcome, the Cavs struggled without him on the court.
Mitchell could be a valuable addition to the Pelicans, but considering their injury woes, it’s a risky move. If the Pelicans are to trade for Mitchell, it’s speculated that Brandon Ingram, Jordan Hawkins, and a couple of first-round draft picks would be part of the deal.
