Pelicans Claim Swingman Matt Ryan Off Waivers

The New Orleans Pelicans have successfully claimed  swingman Matt Ryan off waivers, as reported by Shams Charania of The Athletic.

Matt Ryan, who entered the league undrafted in 2020 from Chattanooga, had a mixed 2022/23 season with stints at the Lakers and Timberwolves.

Initially, the 26-year-old earned a regular roster spot with the Lakers but was released after just 12 appearances.

Subsequently, Ryan agreed to a two-way contract with the Timberwolves but had limited playing time there as well.

Over the course of the previous NBA season, he posted modest averages of 3.6 points, 0.8 rebounds, and 0.5 assists in a total of 34 games.

During June, the Timberwolves extended a two-way qualifying offer to Ryan, making him a restricted free agent, and he eventually signed this offer.

However, he failed to secure a permanent spot on the roster and was subsequently waived by the Timberwolves on Friday.

The Pelicans have now taken on Ryan’s one-year, two-way contract and didn’t need to make any corresponding roster moves, as they had an available two-way slot.

Matt Ryan joins Dereon Seabron and Kaiser Gates as New Orleans’ two-way players.
