Paul George : Kawhi Leonard Unlikely to Suit Up For Game 1 vs Mavericks

Even though Kawhi Leonard’s status has been upgraded to questionable for the first playoff game against the Dallas Mavericks, his availability remains uncertain, with teammate Paul George indicating he’s unlikely to play, according to a report by Law Murray of the Athletic.

George also added, “When he’s [ Kawhi ] ready, he’ll be ready.”…”I do think at some point he’ll be with us.”

Leonard has been grappling with persistent inflammation in his surgically repaired right knee for almost three weeks. Despite progress, the inflammation needs to decrease further for him to perform functional basketball movements, said  Lawrence Frank, president of basketball operations.

The Clippers, seeded fourth, are set to host the fifth-seeded Mavericks on Sunday. Leonard has been sidelined since March 31, missing the final eight games of the regular season. Although he received a knee injection earlier this month, details of the treatment remain unspecified.

Leonard has been involved in film sessions and scouting of the Mavericks’ personnel, but he hasn’t been able to engage in any physical contact on the court, according to Frank. The team sent Frank to address reporters after coach Tyronn Lue expressed frustration with repeated questions about Leonard’s status.

Frank emphasized Leonard’s commitment to playing when healthy and clarified that his current inflammation is unrelated to previous knee issues. Despite past playoff setbacks, Leonard’s performance during the regular season has been impressive, averaging 23.7 points, 6.1 rebounds, and 3.6 assists.

Frank highlighted Leonard’s dedication to performing at his best in crucial moments. Leonard has faced injuries in previous playoffs, including a torn meniscus and a knee sprain, but his resilience and commitment to the team are evident, as demonstrated by his recent 3-year contract extension with the Clippers.
