Evidently, Jayson Tatum made an attempt to convince Damian Lillard, the star point guard of Portland Trail Blazers, to join the Boston Celtics instead of heading to the Miami Heat as revealed by NBA writer Marc Spears.
It’s widely known in the NBA community that Damian Lillard is seeking a trade from the Portland Trail Blazers. The seven-time All-Star isn’t interested in a team rebuild; instead, he’s aiming for an opportunity to contend for an NBA championship, with the Miami Heat as his potential choice for achieving that goal.
Even though the Heat haven’t yet secured a deal for Lillard, they are positioned as the leading contenders to acquire this highly skilled guard. However, this reality didn’t deter Jayson Tatum, a prominent player for the Boston Celtics, from making an effort to persuade his fellow No. 0 jersey wearer to consider joining the Celtics instead.

Reportedly, Tatum has made contact with Lillard by phone, aiming to entice him to join the Celtics. NBA journalist Marc Spears revealed on a sports podcast with The Oregonian that Tatum personally reached out to Lillard through a direct call. However, despite Tatum’s efforts, Lillard’s preference still leans towards Miami rather than Boston.
“I know Jayson Tatum’s called [Damian Lillard],” Spears said. “Tried to get in his ear. But [Lillard’s] focus is definitely on Miami.”
Currently, the Boston Celtics and the Miami Heat emerge as the likely contenders in the Eastern Conference. They’ve encountered each other in three out of the last four Conference Finals and have collectively appeared in the NBA Finals on three occasions since 2020.
Despite their shared appearances, neither team secured the championship during that period, suggesting that Lillard might be the sought-after missing piece for both squads.
For the Celtics, however, Lillard’s addition might not align as seamlessly. They recently inked a substantial contract with star guard Jaylen Brown and invested significantly in him and new center Kristaps Porzingis.
If the Celtics’ front office genuinely believed they had a chance at acquiring Lillard, they might not have granted Brown the most lucrative contract in league history.
Conversely, in Miami, a move for the 33-year-old guard appears more feasible. South Beach holds allure for numerous stars, and the Heat’s culture of tenacity, hard work, and winning was vividly evident during their impressive journey to last year’s Finals.
Financially, they are also positioned for a substantial trade, although the timing of whether Portland will execute such a trade remains uncertain.
Irrespective of Lillard’s eventual destination, the rivalry between the Celtics and the Heat seems poised to persist. The most recent Eastern Conference playoff finals between these long-standing rival sides proved to be one of the most memorable matchups.
The overall victory achieved by the Miami Heat was a clear reflection of the intense and captivating nature of the games. Witnessing the Miami Heat initially lead with a 3-0 advantage, only for the Celtics to rally and level the series at 3-3, made for a truly compelling contest.
Ultimately, the Miami Heat sealed the deal in a remarkable manner, securing their place in the NBA finals. In fact, an early encounter between the two teams in the upcoming season is scheduled for October 27th during the 2023-24 NBA season.
