The New York Knicks plan to bring Maurice Cheeks on board as an assistant coach under Tom Thibodeau, according to ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski.
Cheeks and Thibodeau have been friends for many years, with Cheeks most recently serving on the Bulls’ coaching staff.
Maurice Cheeks, a renowned point guard and Hall of Fame inductee who won a championship with the Sixers in 1983, has also served as head coach for the Trail Blazers, Sixers, and Pistons. His coaching career includes a regular season record of 305-315 and three playoff appearances in nine seasons.
After two disappointing years with the Chicago Bulls ending in play-in tournament exits, Cheeks is now set to join Tom Thibodeau on the New York Knicks.
The Knicks are positioned to become a formidable team in the Eastern Conference for the foreseeable future, boasting numerous draft picks and tradable contracts that offer ample opportunities to strengthen their roster.
Under Thibodeau’s guidance over the past four seasons, the Knicks have amassed a regular season record of 175-143 and a playoff record of 14-15, advancing to the second round twice. Thibodeau was honored as Coach of the Year in his debut season with the team in 2020/21.
Despite facing numerous injuries this year, New York put up a strong fight in a seven-game conference semifinal series against the Pacers, ultimately falling short.
