Kenny Atkinson Leading Race for Cavs Coaching Role; Johnnie Bryant Also in the Mix

After parting ways with J.B. Bickerstaff recently, the Cavs are now on the hunt for a new head coach before the 2024/25 season begins. According to Jason Lloyd of The Athletic, Golden State Warriors assistant coach Kenny Atkinson is currently the frontrunner for the job.

Atkinson has previous experience coaching Cavaliers players Jarrett Allen and Caris LeVert during his time as the head coach of the Brooklyn Nets.

Another contender to watch is New York Knicks assistant coach Johnnie Bryant. Bryant has a history with current Cleveland guard Donovan Mitchell from their time together at the Utah Jazz.

With rumors swirling about a potential trade involving Mitchell this offseason if he doesn’t extend, hiring Bryant could potentially alter those plans.

Cavaliers owner Dan Gilbert is reportedly taking a more active role in the coaching search than initially expected. While Gilbert has been involved in hiring decisions in the past, his level of involvement this time around appears to be greater. This marks a departure from when Cleveland hired JB Bickerstaff as head coach four years ago.
