Kawhi Leonard, who was initially listed as questionable, has now been ruled out indefinitely by the LA Clippers without a set timeline for his return.
He will miss Game 4 against the Dallas Mavericks due to inflammation in his surgically repaired right knee. This injury forced him to sit out for 22 days previously before returning to play 35 minutes in Game 2.
Despite managing to play 25 minutes in Game 3 and tallying nine points and nine rebounds, Leonard admitted that the inflammation in his knee didn’t improve as he had anticipated after Game 2.
Clippers president Lawrence Frank explained that the decision to sideline Leonard was made with his long-term health in mind, as reported by Brad Townsend of The Dallas Morning News.
Despite their fourth seed in the Western Conference and a solid 51-31 record, the Clippers face a challenge without Leonard, who had an impressive regular season averaging 23.7 points, 6.1 rebounds, 3.6 assists, and 1.6 steals per game, shooting efficiently at 52.5% from the field and 41.7% from three-point range.
Last season, the Clippers fell short in the first round, losing to Kevin Durant and the Phoenix Suns in five games. With a roster boasting talents like Russell Westbrook, James Harden, and Paul George, an early exit from the playoffs would be a major letdown.
On the Mavericks’ side, they hold the fifth seed with a matching 51-31 record. Heading into Game 4, Tim Hardaway Jr. has been ruled out, and Luka Doncic’s status is game-time decision.
Game 5 is set for Tuesday evening in Los Angeles. The series winner will advance to face either the Thunder or the Pelicans in the next round.
