Joel Embiid, Philadelphia 76ers superstar and the reigning NBA MVP, has officially committed to representing Team USA in the 2024 Paris Olympics.
This decision, as reported by ESPN’s Ramona Shelburne, marks Embiid’s debut appearance in the Olympics.
Notably, he chose to wear the USA jersey over considering his native Cameroon and France, where he holds citizenship.
Securing Embiid’s commitment was the top priority for USA Basketball, particularly after their disappointing performance in the 2023 FIBA World Cup, where they finished outside the podium with a 5-3 record.
Despite sending their B-team to the World Cup, their struggles in FIBA play highlighted the necessity of adding an elite big man to the Olympic roster. Embiid’s commitment addresses this need effectively.
FIBA’s rule changes, including no three-in-the-key, a smaller court, and the ability to touch the ball once it’s on the rim, favor teams with a skilled and dominant center. Embiid perfectly fits this description.
As the reigning NBA MVP, he boasts two scoring titles and three All-Defensive Team selections.
He offers the U.S. a 7’1″ powerhouse who excels in scoring inside, stretching defenses with his jump shot, dominating the boards, and providing solid rim protection.
The United States has maintained its gold medal streak in men’s basketball at the Olympics for four consecutive cycles.
However, the global competition is becoming increasingly challenging. In the recent World Cup, the U.S. team suffered losses to Lithuania, Germany, and Canada despite having the most talented roster.
Now, the U.S. is assembling its strongest possible squad to assert its dominance in the sport as the Paris Olympics approach, scheduled to begin on July 26, 2024.
