The Memphis Grizzlies are trading forward/center Xavier Tillman to the Boston Celtics, according to ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski.
In return, the Grizzlies will receive two second-round picks. The Celtics are giving up a second-round pick from 2027 via Atlanta and another from 2030 via Dallas.
This trade benefits Boston by acquiring Tillman, a young and adaptable player in the frontcourt, which bolsters their roster depth as they pursue a championship.
Tillman, aged 25 and standing at 6 feet 8 inches, has encountered difficulties while playing for the injury-ridden Grizzlies, with stats showing an average of 6.0 points, 4.6 rebounds, and 1.7 assists, along with a career-low shooting percentage of 40%.
Previously, he boasted a 55% shooting accuracy during his initial three seasons, all spent with Memphis.
In the meantime, the Celtics have been actively seeking to strengthen their bench since around mid-November, and Tillman appears to be their initial move leading up to Thursday’s NBA trade deadline.
Initially picked by the Sacramento Kings as the No. 35 overall selection in the 2020 NBA Draft, Tillman was promptly traded to the Grizzlies. Throughout his career, he has maintained averages of 6.2 points and 4.3 rebounds, with last season marking career highs of 7.0 points and 5.0 rebounds across 61 games.
His potential acquisition by the Celtics could signal the conclusion of forward Lamar Stevens’ tenure with the team.
