Former Heat star Gabe Vincent has clarified the reasons behind choosing to join the Los Angeles Lakers rather than remaining with the Miami Heat, a team with whom he had helped reach the NBA Finals.
When the Los Angeles Lakers inked a three-year, $33 million contract with Gabe Vincent, it was met with enthusiasm from fans of the Purple and Gold.
Vincent had previously served as the starting point guard for the Miami Heat, a team that had recently reached the NBA Finals, and his skill set appeared to make him a strong complement to LeBron James and Anthony Davis.
Despite this, Vincent has not replicated the same level of success with the Lakers, leading some to speculate that his performance was mainly a result of the Heat’s renowned culture and coaching under Erik Spo.
However, the 27-year-old combo guard acknowledged that his decision to move to LA was the most logical one due to the Heat’s challenging financial situation, making it difficult for them to retain him.
He explained, “I think I had a good playoff run, and I think that changed my value. I think once that changed, it just became more difficult. I think Miami wanted me to be there. I think I was naturally looking to return to the team I just had a Finals run with and the team I had been with for the last three or four seasons. It’s unfortunate it didn’t work out. But my value had changed,” according to Anthony Chiang of the Miami Herald.
Gabe Vincent was a perfect fit for the gritty Heat team, excelling as an above-average defender at the point guard position, facilitating ball movement, and making challenging shots off the dribble.
Staying with the Heat would have been more convenient as it would not have required a significant adjustment, unlike his current situation with the Lakers.
However, the Heat were grappling with salary cap constraints, approaching the luxury tax threshold without even making any moves in free agency.
Given that Vincent had earned only around $3.5 million during his time in Miami, his decision to accept the best offer available is certainly justified.
Currently sidelined for at least the next two weeks due to a left knee injury, Gabe Vincent’s primary focus should now be on recovering his health and giving his all for the Lakers once he returns from injury.
