Crippling Achilles Injury Ends Cam Akers’ Season with the Vikings

An MRI examination has indeed confirmed that Cam Akers, the running back for the Vikings, tore his Achilles on Sunday, resulting in his season-ending absence, the team announced.

This unfortunate injury occurred during the third quarter at Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta, and he was immediately sidelined, requiring assistance to leave the field.

At the time of the injury, Akers had carried the ball eight times for 25 yards. Minnesota had to rely more heavily on Alexander Mattison and Ty Chandler for the remainder of the game.

This marks the second Achilles injury in Akers’ career, as he had previously torn the tendon prior to the 2021 season, missing most of that season but impressively making a comeback just five months later to help the Los Angeles Rams secure a Super Bowl title.

The Vikings have faced a disproportionate number of Achilles injuries this season, with star quarterback Kirk Cousins suffering the same fate in Week 8 against the Green Bay Packers.

Additionally, their offense was already without the services of superstar wideout Justin Jefferson, who is currently on the injured reserve, and K.J. Osborn, who exited the game on Sunday due to concussion protocol.

Given these challenges, the performance of recently acquired quarterback Josh Dobbs, who managed to lead the team to victory and score 31 points, is even more remarkable.

Akers, a former second-round pick by the Rams in 2020, was traded to Minnesota on September 21 and was expected to form a potent running back duo with Mattison.

He had accumulated 52 carries for 142 yards and two touchdowns in the current season.
