The Los Angeles Clippers might see some changes in their point guard position next season. With James Harden heading into free agency and Russell Westbrook potentially opting out of his $4 million player option for the 2024-25 season, there’s speculation that Chris Paul could make a return to the Clippers this summer.
Paul, who spent six years with the team during the “Lob City” era, is reportedly among the options being considered by several teams, including the Clippers, reports Marc Stein.
“ I nonetheless heard this week that Paul and Kyle Lowry, whose free agency is looming after finishing last season in Philadelphia, are veteran guards said to interest the Clippers … with a further variable to factor in stemming from Russell Westbrook’s still-to-be determined status. Westbrook has a $4 million player option for next season that he must decide on by June 29.” Stein wrote.
Another veteran point guard, Kyle Lowry, is also on the Clippers’ radar. Lowry’s free agency is looming after finishing last season with the Philadelphia 76ers, and he’s said to be of interest to the Clippers as well. The team’s decision may also be influenced by Westbrook’s uncertain status.
The Clippers face the challenge of potentially losing Paul George in free agency if they don’t offer him a lucrative contract. Retaining George could require exceeding Kawhi Leonard’s recent extension of three years and $150 million. If the Clippers invest heavily in George, it might impact their ability to sign Harden, potentially opening the door for a more budget-friendly option like CP3 or Lowry.
Paul, at 39, played mostly in a backup role for the Golden State Warriors last season, averaging 9.2 points and 6.8 assists per game. Lowry, also in his late 30s, posted similar stats between the Miami Heat and the 76ers.
If the Clippers retain Westbrook but lose Harden, they may not necessarily need Paul or Lowry to start, allowing them to manage their minutes more effectively. As the Clippers prepare for the offseason, they could undergo significant changes, though running it back with the current roster remains a possibility.
