According to Marc Stein of The Stein Line, the Cleveland Cavaliers are increasingly expected to offer Evan Mobley a max contract extension this summer. The Cavs are also becoming more confident about extending Donovan Mitchell’s contract.
At 22, Mobley isn’t seen as a flight risk since he’s signed through the 2024-25 season, and the Cavs can match any offers if he becomes a restricted free agent. The front office might face a similar situation with Jarrett Allen, who has two years left on his deal.
Mobley’s agents had reportedly advised the Cavs to be cautious when drafting him with the third pick in the 2021 NBA Draft. Now, three years into his career, he’s one of their best players.
It seems increasingly likely that Cleveland will need to choose between Donovan Mitchell and Darius Garland for their backcourt. Also according to sources m, Garland’s representatives might ask for a trade if Mitchell, who is also eligible for an extension, commits to a long-term contract with the Cavaliers.
If the Cavs manage to re-sign both Mobley and Mitchell, Jarrett Allen future could be in doubt and is likely to become a valuable trade asset for teams around the league, according to Evan Sidery of Forbes Sports.
