The Boston Celtics have updated the status of center Kristaps Porzingis’ injury ahead of Game 3 against the Dallas Mavericks.
According to the team’s press release, Porzingis sustained a torn medial retinaculum and is being considered day-to-day.
The statement read: “Celtics Center Kristaps Porzingis suffered a torn medial retinaculum allowing dislocation of the posterior tibialis tendon in his left leg at 3:27 of the third quarter of Game 2. The injury is unrelated to Porzingis’s prior right calf injury. After consultation with numerous specialists regarding this rare injury, his availability for upcoming games will be determined day-to-day.”
The incident occurred during the fourth quarter of Game 2 of the NBA Finals on Sunday night when Porzingis seemed to hurt his leg after colliding with Dallas’ P.J. Washington during a driving layup by the Mavs power forward.
Despite limping after the play, he remained on the court for a few more minutes before leaving the game with 4:40 left. The Celtics secured a 105-98 victory, giving them a 2-0 series lead.
According to Celtics coach, Joe Mazulla, the injury is quite serious and the Celtics’ medical team will make the decision about Porzingis’ availability.
“We’ve taken the decision to play out of his hands.” He told reporters. “ He’s [KP] doing anything and everything he can to be able to play”
Porzingis says he’s optimistic and ready for Game 3 despite the injury,
“I’ll do everything I have to be out there tomorrow….nothing is going to stop me unless I’m told I’m not allowed to play.”
Sunday marked Porzingis’ second game back after missing 11 due to a calf strain. Coming off the bench, he contributed 12 points on 4-for-7 shooting, along with four rebounds, two blocked shots, and an assist.
