The Cleveland Cavaliers and star guard Donovan Mitchell have agreed on a three-year contract extension valued at over $150 million, as reported by ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski. This new deal will include a player option for the third year.
Mitchell’s upcoming contract will take the place of the player option in his current deal and will start in the 2025-26 season. Although the extension could have lasted up to four years, opting for a three-year term with a player option positions Mitchell to potentially ink a new contract in 2027.
By then, he will have 10 years of NBA experience, qualifying him for a maximum salary worth 35% of the cap, instead of the current 30%.
Since trading for Mitchell from the Utah Jazz two years ago, the Cavaliers have consistently reached the playoffs, even advancing to the Eastern Conference semifinals last season.
In a notable performance, Mitchell scored 89 points across Games 6 and 7 of the first-round playoff series win against the Magic, marking the second-highest point total in NBA postseason history for those games.
At 27, Mitchell has been an All-Star for five consecutive seasons and averaged 26.6 points in the 2023-2024 season, a feat only he and LeBron James have achieved multiple times in Cavaliers’ history.
