The Atlanta Braves have acquired right-handed reliever Jimmy Herget from the Angels in exchange for money, as confirmed by both teams.
Atlanta had an available spot on their 40-man roster after releasing David Fletcher last week. They sent Herget down to Triple-A Gwinnett, so there was no need for any additional transactions.
Anthopoulos is striking a deal with a front office he knows well, since the Angels’ GM used to work under him. Herget, an experienced player, had some shining moments in the majors but hasn’t performed as impressively lately.
He had a standout season in 2022 and a decent one in 2021, but his performance dipped in 2023. When he’s at his best, he manages an average strikeout rate while minimizing walks and home runs, relying heavily on his breaking balls like the slider and curveball.
Although his fastballs, including the sinker and four-seamer, are easier for batters to connect with, he predominantly throws his breaking balls. He’d be a valuable addition for veteran depth in AAA, without requiring any significant assets.
