According to reports from Shams Charania of The Athletic and Stadium, the Boston Celtics are set to ink a contract with Wenyen Gabriel, who previously suited up for the Los Angeles Lakers in the previous season.
Wenyen Gabriel is coming off a season in which he participated in 68 regular season matches (and ten NBA playoff encounters) for the Los Angeles Lakers.
The former standout from Kentucky posted averages of 5.5 points and 4.2 rebounds per game while boasting an impressive 59.6% field goal shooting percentage.
Gabriel’s outstanding performance for South Sudan in the FIBA World Cup this summer played a pivotal role in securing the team’s maiden qualification for the 2024 Olympics.
Gabriel managed to tally an average of 9.2 points and 6.8 rebounds for South Sudan and recently undertook workouts with the Celtics in Boston.
It’s worth noting that Gabriel initially went undrafted in 2018 after a two-season stint in college basketball with the Wildcats.
In addition to his tenure with the Lakers, Gabriel has also graced the courts for the New Orleans Pelicans, Portland Trail Blazers, Sacramento Kings, Los Angeles Clippers, and again for the Trail Blazers over the course of four seasons.
His career statistics stand at 4.5 points and 3.4 rebounds per game, coupled with an impressive 59.6% field goal accuracy across 68 regular season appearances (he has also contributed to 14 NBA playoff matchups).
As for the Celtics, they are emerging from a season where they held the second seed in the Eastern Conference but ultimately succumbed to the Miami Heat in a dramatic Game 7 of the Conference Finals.
