The Toronto Blue Jays have signed a minor league deal with right-handed pitcher Beau Sulser, who celebrated his 30th birthday by taking the mound for Triple-A Buffalo today.
Sulser’s major league experience is limited to the 2022 season, where he recorded a 3.63 ERA over 22 1/3 innings split between the Pirates and Orioles.
Originally a 10th-round selection by Pittsburgh in 2017, Sulser bounced between teams via waivers before landing a stint with the KT Wiz in the KBO League.
Despite a challenging 2023, split between South Korea and a return to the Pirates, Sulser’s performance in the affiliated minors shows a 4.31 ERA and a 6.64% walk rate over 413 innings.
His pitching style emphasizes control, inducing ground balls, and limiting hard contact, though his strikeout rate is modest at 19.49%.
While Sulser struggled during his time in the KBO League, his versatility as both a starter and reliever could prove valuable. The Blue Jays, dealing with injuries to Rodriguez and Francis and uncertainties surrounding Manoah, are in need of pitching depth.
If their rotation faces further setbacks, Sulser could be a candidate for a call-up, potentially alongside Paolo Espino from Triple-A.
