Pistons Waive Troy Brown Jr., Declines Evan Fournier’s Team Option

The Detroit Pistons have chosen not to guarantee swingman Troy Brown Jr.’s $4 million contract for the 2024/25 season and will instead waive him, according to James L. Edwards III and Shams Charania of The Athletic. They are also declining Evan Fournier’s $19 million team option, per Wojnarowski of ESPN.

Brown signed a two-year, $8 million deal with the Timberwolves in the 2023 offseason. He received $4 million for the first year, with the second year’s $4 million being non-guaranteed. This salary would have become guaranteed if he had stayed under contract through Sunday.

The 6’6″ small forward was traded from Minnesota to Detroit halfway through the 2023/24 season as part of a deal for Monte Morris. Throughout the season, he averaged 4.2 points, 2.4 rebounds, and 1.0 assists in 14 minutes per game across 59 games, including 15 starts.

A journeyman known for his 3-and-D capabilities, Brown has previously played for the Wizards, Bulls, and Lakers from 2018 to 2023 before spending last season with the Timberwolves and Pistons. Now, it seems he’ll be moving again.

These roster moves open up $50 million in cap room for the franchise. New President Trajan Langdon is eager to use the team’s space to take on contracts with future draft assets, Wojnarowski adds.
