Pistons Expected to Offer Cade Cunningham Max Extension This Summer

Despite missing the majority of his second NBA season and the Detroit Pistons facing significant challenges in the 23-24 season, it appears that Cade Cunningham is poised to secure a maximum contract extension this summer.

According to James L. Edwards III of The Athletic, all indications point towards this outcome. Cunningham, 22, is eligible for a contract extension this offseason.

“I’m 99.9 percent sure that Cunningham gets an extension this offseason,” Edwards writes. “I don’t want to say 100 percent because you never know what can happen, but I’d be stunned if the 2021 No. 1 overall pick doesn’t sign a max rookie extension.”

During the season, Cunningham posted impressive stats, averaging 22.7 points, 7.5 assists, and 4.3 rebounds per game, while achieving a 35 percent shooting rate from beyond the arc.

Even amid Detroit’s struggles, he demonstrated significant improvement in his efficiency. This offseason, Trajan Langdon takes over the Detroit front office from Troy Weaver.
