Despite swirling rumors about the San Antonio Spurs potentially acquiring Trae Young from the Atlanta Hawks, recent reports suggest otherwise.
ESPN’s Tim MacMahon previously indicated that Spurs star Victor Wembanyama showed some intrigue about the idea of trading for Young, but it seems that sentiment isn’t shared by the organization as a whole.
During an appearance on the Hoop Collective podcast, MacMahon said, “I will say I have talked to people who know Wemby who have indicated he is at least intrigued by the idea. Now, intrigued by that idea and pounding the table are two very different things. I have no idea whether Gregg Popovich would be intrigued by the idea.”
While MacMahon added that Wembanyama seemingly hasn’t been pounding the table for a Young trade to get done, the ESPN insider made it seem that the Spurs phenom is open to the possibility.
However, in a new report from Jake Fischer of Yahoo Sports, it was revealed that the Spurs may not be as interested in Young as some might think.
“According to multiple league figures with knowledge of the situation, any Spurs plans of maneuvering to bring Young to San Antonio have been vastly overstated,” Fischer wrote. “The Spurs, sources said, have expressed little interest in obtaining Young to date.”
While the Spurs remain active in seeking help for their young star, it appears that they don’t view Young as the right fit for their roster and are likely to explore the market for available guards.
Both the Spurs and the Hawks missed the playoffs this season and will be looking forward to making adjustments to their rosters before the new season starts.
Atlanta may move Trae Young in the summer, but trading him to the San Antonio Spurs may just be like their odds during the draft selection. Despite the odds being heavily stacked against them, they ended up with the first selection – you may never know.
