Derrick Jones Jr. Hopes to Remain With Dallas Mavericks Next Season

Derrick Jones Jr. joined the Dallas Mavericks on a veteran minimum contract and has exceeded expectations by becoming a key starter for them during the playoffs. Now, he hopes to stay with the Mavericks as a free agent, but he understands the financial constraints the team faces.

According to Aaron Turner, Jones’ agent, he has a strong affinity for his teammates, coach Jason Kidd, and the Mavericks’ front office, particularly president Nico Harrison and Matt Riccardi.

“He loves his teammates, he loves Jason Kidd, he really likes the front office, (Mavericks president) Nico (Harrison) and Matt Riccardi,” Jones agent Aaron Turner said. “He wants to be back.”

Turner anticipates that Jones will explore his options in the market, as is common for players in his position. However, they are optimistic that Dallas will be able to offer a contract that aligns with both Jones’ value and the team’s financial considerations.

“We understand the business (and that) there’s other teams that can maybe pay him more,” Kidd said. “But we definitely want him back.”

Jones has started in 66 out of 76 games this season, averaging a career-high 8.6 points per game on 48% shooting, including a career-best 34% from beyond the arc. In the playoffs, he has maintained solid scoring at 8.9 points per game and has added 1.5 blocks per game.

Currently, the Mavericks are tied 2-2 with the Oklahoma City Thunder in the Western Conference semifinals. Game five is set to take place at the Paycom Center, with both teams aiming to gain an edge in the series.

The victor will advance to face either the Minnesota Timberwolves or the reigning champions, the Denver Nuggets, in the Western Conference Finals.
