Orlando Magic to Acquire Klay Thompson in Free Agency

The Orlando Magic are being talked about as a potential destination for Klay Thompson in the upcoming free agency, and it seems like they’re interested in each other. Shams Charania mentioned on FanDuel’s Run it Back show that there’s mutual interest between Thompson and the Magic.

Several veteran players, including Thompson, are eyeing the Magic as a team where they could make a significant impact alongside young talents like Paolo Banchero and Franz Wagner.

“I’m told there is mutual interest between the Magic and Klay Thompson,” Charania said. “Thompson, along with several other vets around the league, are looking at the Magic as a situation where if you plug in a guy like Klay Thompson, you plug in another veteran player – whether it be at the point guard position (or) the shooting guard position – this team can make a real jump around Paolo Banchero and Franz Wagner.”

Orlando has the flexibility to create a good amount of cap space to pursue scoring and shooting help in the offseason, even with their current roster commitments. They could have around $32 million in cap room, which could increase if they decide to part ways with some players.

The Magic are reportedly considering free agents like Thompson and Malik Monk, with indications that they’re willing to offer Thompson a substantial contract. If Thompson is genuinely interested in joining the Magic, it could signal a real possibility of him leaving the Warriors.

However, Thompson has expressed a preference for staying in Golden State, so other teams like Orlando might be used as leverage. Yet, factors like role and salary will weigh heavily in Thompson’s decision, and the Magic can make a compelling pitch on both fronts.

Thompson had a solid season with the Warriors, averaging 17.9 points per game while shooting efficiently. Although he faced some lineup changes during the season, he remains a key player for Golden State.

While he has the option to sign an extension with the Warriors, there haven’t been any significant discussions lately, and he previously turned down a sizable offer before the season started.
