The Chicago Bears have officially inked a two-year contract extension with defensive tackle Andrew Billings, sealing the deal at a hefty sum of $8.5 million, which includes a substantial $6 million in guaranteed money, according to Adam Schefter of ESPN.
Billings initially entered the Bears’ roster this season under a one-year contract, with the expectation that his primary role would be as a formidable force against the run, occupying the position of a nose tackle.
However, the 28-year-old has impressively demonstrated his versatility by becoming one of the most effective pass rushers on the team. In fact, his 14 pressures have positioned him in a tie for third place among the Bears’ defensive linemen this season.
Moreover, Billings boasts a remarkable 11.1% pass rush win rate, which stands as the best within the unit. Although Billings hasn’t managed to secure any sacks, he has recorded three tackles for loss, placing him in the fourth spot among the team’s defensive linemen.
The prevalent discussions regarding potential contract extensions for the Bears have predominantly revolved around cornerback Jaylon Johnson and the recently acquired defensive end, Montez Sweat.
Johnson, renowned for his outstanding coverage skills, has also been demonstrating an increased ability to create turnovers, catching the attention of the Bears’ management.
In fact, General Manager Ryan Poles believed that an agreement with Johnson was on the horizon as the trade deadline loomed.
However, a surprising twist occurred when Johnson’s representatives expressed their interest in exploring trade opportunities, ultimately leading to no trade materializing for the talented cornerback.
The Bears ultimately opted to be buyers rather than sellers at the trade deadline, acquiring Montez Sweat in exchange for a valuable second-round pick.
Sweat, like Johnson, is playing on the final year of his contract. Poles has revealed that he is currently in active negotiations with Sweat’s representation to solidify a new contract for the promising defensive end.
