Hornets Sign Ish Smith, Waive Edmond Sumner

Charlotte Hornets are inking a deal with the experienced guard Ish Smith, as per Shams Charania of The Athletic. Furthermore, the Hornets are set to release Edmond Sumner in order to create room on their roster.

Ish Smith embarks on his 14th season in the league, coming off a season where he contributed 2.5 points, 1.3 rebounds, and 2.3 assists per game across 43 appearances for the Denver Nuggets, ultimately becoming an NBA champion while playing an average of 9.3 minutes per game.

Throughout his career, Smith has maintained an average of 7.3 points and 3.8 assists over 762 games, spanning his journey through Houston, Memphis, Golden State, Orlando, Milwaukee, Phoenix, Oklahoma City, Philadelphia (twice), New Orleans, Detroit, Washington, Denver, and Charlotte (twice – including today).

Remarkably, Smith holds the NBA record for donning the jerseys of the most teams in a single career, a grand total of 13, with the Detroit Pistons being his longest stopover, encompassing three seasons from 2016 to 2019.

Regarding Edmond Sumner, he saw action in 53 games for the Brooklyn Nets last season, averaging 7.1 points, 1.5 rebounds, and 1.3 assists per game, before joining the Charlotte hornets alongside R.J Hunter back in September.

Heading into the 2023-24 season, the Hornets are on a mission to find answers. Their track record reveals only one winning season in the last seven years, and they currently claim the title of the NBA’s longest playoff drought, which spans seven seasons.

With a promising young core that includes talents like LaMelo Ball and Brandon Miller, the Hornets are looking to change their fortunes for the better. Their 2023-24 journey begins with an opening game against the Atlanta Hawks on Wednesday night.
