Should Grizzlies Fans Worry About Kenneth Lofton Jr. Weighing Over 300 Pounds at Training Camp?

With the upcoming season on the horizon, the Grizzlies undoubtedly aim to have all their players in top shape.

Yet, there’s concern as PF Kenneth Lofton Jr reportedly arrived at training camp with a weight exceeding 300 pounds.

During a recent episode of his eponymous podcast, Chris Vernon, known for his Grizzlies coverage at Grind City Media, relayed a worrisome anecdote concerning Kenneth Lofton Jr., the Memphis big man.

Vernon mentioned that Lofton arrived at this year’s training camp carrying excess weight, tipping the scales at over 300 pounds. “The Lofton thing is not good. It’s not. To come back over 300 pounds? It’s like, ‘Come on, man.’”

Lofton, a 21-year-old player who secured a two-way contract with the Grizzlies after going undrafted last year, showcased his prowess in the G League.

He averaged 20.2 points and 10.5 rebounds per game for the Memphis Hustle, earning himself the G League Rookie of the Year Award.

Despite only making 24 appearances in the NBA with the Grizzlies last season, he culminated the year with a spectacular performance, delivering a remarkable 42-point, 14-rebound game that showcased his diverse skill set.

For context, Lofton’s official weight last season stood at 275 pounds (indicating a gain of over 25 pounds during the offseason, according to Vernon’s assertion).

Lofton’s playing style predominantly revolves around a powerful, low-post game, often likened to a spiritual successor to Zach Randolph, known for his grounded yet highly effective style.

However, given the Grizzlies’ shortage of frontcourt players at present, it appears unlikely that they can rely on Lofton for the ongoing season until he improves his physical condition.

The 2023–24 preseason commenced on a positive note for Lofton Jr. The Grizzlies faced the Indiana Pacers in their first preseason matchup.

Lofton Jr. managed to accumulate 11 points in just 11 minutes, boasting an impressive 83.3% field goal shooting and a perfect 100% from the three-point line.

Despite limited playing time thus far, he has earned the trust of coach Taylor Jenkins, which might translate into increased minutes once the regular season kicks off.
