The Orlando Magic have officially added Oni to their roster, as confirmed in a press release today.
In order to accommodate this addition and adhere to the 21-man roster limit, the Magic waived D.J. Wilson, who was previously on an Exhibit 10 contract.
An Exhibit 10 contract comes with the flexibility to be converted into a two-way deal or to make a player eligible for a bonus of up to $75,000 if they are released during the preseason and then spend a minimum of 60 days with their team’s G League affiliate.
Oni, a former standout from Yale and the 58th overall pick in the 2019 draft, made appearances in 80 games for the Utah Jazz over three seasons from 2019 to 2022.
However, he couldn’t establish himself as a consistent presence in the NBA rotation, with averages of just 1.8 points and 1.4 rebounds in 8.4 minutes per game during those years.
In January 2022, Oni was traded from the Jazz to the Thunder, who subsequently waived him.
He briefly joined the New Orleans Pelicans on a 10-day hardship contract later in the season but didn’t see any game time.
Following his free agency last summer, Oni signed with the London Lions in the British Basketball League and had a successful season, contributing to their BBL championship win and securing a place in the EuroCup playoffs.
Currently, the Orlando Magic have 17 players under contract, including 14 on guaranteed contracts, one (Jonathan Isaac) on a partially guaranteed deal, and two on two-way agreements.
The team is also reportedly finalizing a training camp deal with Trevelin Queen. Adding Queen and Oni would bring their roster count to 19 players, just two players short of the offseason limit.
