Victor Wembanyama, San Antonio Spurs Rookie, is quickly immersing himself in his newfound surroundings.
For the second time in recent months, Victor Wembanyama has caused a stir at Southtown 101, a popular San Antonio bar.
The initial instance of this buzz was sparked by a magnificent mural of Wemby adorning the front of the establishment, crafted by the talented local artist Colten Valentine.
Even the esteemed San Antonio Spurs coach, Gregg Popovich, couldn’t resist making a drive-by appearance for an inspection and a selfie with Valentine. That photograph now takes pride of place behind the bar.
This past Sunday, Wembanyama himself paid a visit to the mural and engaged in conversation with the patrons inside the establishment.
Sporting a cowboy hat, sweat shorts, and a loose-fitting, long-sleeved shirt, Wembanyama casually pulled up a chair at the bar, mingling with the locals.
It’s worth noting, however, that the 19-year-old refrained from indulging in any alcoholic beverages, making it a moment of pure amazement for those lucky enough to be present when the young athlete entered.
Just last week, Wemby embarked on a tour of the city’s centuries-old Catholic missions, guided by none other than Spurs legend Manu Ginobili.
The day’s highlights included a visit to an outdoor court nestled beneath a section of downtown freeway, where Wembanyama effortlessly sank half-court shots, all while wearing sandals, or “chanclas” as they’re affectionately called in this city.
The week prior, he strolled through an inner-city arts district, immersing himself in the local art scene and even acquiring a few pieces.
Although he hasn’t yet taken a shot for the Spurs in an official game, Victor Wembanyama has already endeared himself to the city, displaying both a willingness to be a visible presence and an affable demeanor with those who approach him.
San Antonio, a place that often feels like an outlier even within its own state, can only await the unfolding of history and the outcome of games to determine how this relationship will evolve.
For now, Wemby and his new city have enjoyed an exceptional start to what everyone involved hopes will be a lifelong connection.
