As the start of the regular season approaches, the question of whether Tyler Herro will don the Miami Heat jersey is still uncertain.
However, Matt Houston, an assistant strength and conditioning coach for the team, who has been diligently working with Herro during the offseason, has delivered a noteworthy message: the emerging guard is on the brink of a remarkable progression.
“I’m telling you, I think Tyler will be an All-Star eventually, whether it’s this next season or moving forward,” Matt Houston told Sam Okauru. “He puts in the time, and people don’t see how much he puts into it. And I know he got hurt. People kind of forgot about my guy a little bit. They’re acting like they forgot about what he’s done.”
While Tyler Herro, a product of the University of Kentucky, has faced criticism due to certain limitations in his game, particularly on defense, Matt Houston’s positive remarks about the emerging star are sure to bring a smile to the faces of Miami Heat fans.
It’s worth noting that Herro’s performance for Miami has been impressive ever since he was selected as the No. 13 overall pick in the 2019 draft. In his rookie season, he displayed remarkable maturity in the playoffs, averaging 16.0 points, 5.1 rebounds, and 3.7 assists per game in 21 appearances.
During the 2021-22 season, the 6-foot-5 guard elevated his game further by becoming a vital asset off the Heat’s bench. He clinched the Sixth Man of the Year award that year by leading the league in bench scoring with an average of 20.8 points per game.
In the subsequent 2022-23 season, Herro’s desire to be a starter was fulfilled. He proved to be a valuable addition to the team’s starting lineup, playing alongside the squad’s key players. His contribution of 20.1 points per game ranked third on the team. Regrettably, he suffered a right hand injury after just one playoff game, forcing him to miss the remainder of the postseason and depriving Miami of a crucial offensive asset.
While he undoubtedly longs to return to the court, the possibility of him being part of a trade deal for a superstar remains. Despite the uncertainties, Herro has been making significant strides in his recovery. Houston also assured that the 23-year-old guard will make a strong comeback.
“Big year coming from my guy T-Herro,” Houston enthusiastically stated.
This affirmation is likely to bring joy to Miami Heat fans, considering the growing likelihood that Herro will stay with the team due to the limited advancement in trade negotiations for Heat’s sought-after player, Damian Lillard.
