Donovan Mitchell, also known as Spida, nearly became the much-needed hero for New York Knicks and forming a partnership with his friend Jalen Brunson last year, but the plan didn’t materialize.
Recent reports about Mitchell’s potential move to the Knicks have gained traction across the NBA, particularly given his lack of a contract extension with his current team, the Cleveland Cavaliers.
As long as Mitchell’s extension remains pending, speculations will persist. Currently with Team USA playing exhibition matches ahead of the FIBA World Cup, Brunson has discussed the possibility of teaming up with Mitchell.
“It’s practically impossible to miss all the rumors, whether it’s the stuff you see on Twitter or what’s constantly on TV,” Brunson told The Athletic. “Those things are ever-present. When you’re bombarded with that information, you can’t help but consider the possibilities. Donovan and I have been close friends for a long time. We share a history going back to high school. Currently, I’m content with my teammates, and I have a strong bond with them.”
Brunson had the upper hand in the recent postseason as the Knicks and Cavaliers clashed in the first round, with New York Knicks coming out as the victors. Their series win marked the franchise’s first advancement to the second round in a decade.
While it’s being suggested that Mitchell’s stay in Cleveland might not be prolonged and an extension might not be in the cards, it’s worth noting that the team invested significant assets to acquire him. The pressure is on him to deliver and guide the team to a deep postseason run.
Donovan Mitchell is coming off a standout season in his career. However, his performance in the recent postseason experienced a decline, and he appeared hesitant when attacking the rim.

During the offseason, the team made efforts to strengthen their position by acquiring shooters such as Max Strus and Georges Niang through free agency. This move was intended to alleviate some of the pressure on Mitchell and provide additional offensive support.
