76ers Sign Kenneth Lofton Jr. on Two-Way Deal, Waive Javonte Smart

The Philadelphia 76ers have inked a two-way contract with F/C Kenneth Lofton Jr., as per ESPN’s Adrian Wojnaroski. Additionally, the 76ers are waiving Guard Javonte Smart from his two-way contract.

Lofton found himself caught in Memphis’ roster constraints when the team had to create space for Ja Morant after his 25-game suspension.

Although Lofton initially secured a spot on the 15-man roster at the start of the regular season, he yielded his position to Bismack Biyombo, signed by the Grizzlies during Morant’s suspension in early November.

Despite being a robust 6’7″ forward, Lofton struggled to cement a consistent role, posting modest averages of 2.6 points and 1.0 rebound in 15 appearances, with just 6.6 minutes per game and a 37.8% shooting accuracy.

With his non-guaranteed contract beyond this season, Lofton became a sensible choice for release once the Grizzlies opted to retain Biyombo.

Now, with Smart being waived, Lofton steps in to fill the void on the 76ers roster. Smart’s limited contribution this season included just one game for Philadelphia, as he spent the majority of the season with the Delaware Blue Coats in the G League.

During 16 Showcase Cup games with Delaware, Smart showcased his skills with averages of 21.0 points, 5.8 assists, and 3.9 rebounds, playing 34.5 minutes per game.
